Step aboard San Diego’s naval history at the Nautical History Gallery & Museum, now located aboard the historic USS Recruit (TDE-1) at Arts District Liberty Station.

Affectionately known as “USS Neversail” or “Miss Neversail,” the USS Recruit is a landlocked Navy training ship built on a concrete slab at the former Naval Training Center San Diego. Thousands of sailors trained aboard the Recruit, which holds the unusual distinction of being a commissioned U.S. Navy ship that never went to sea. Today, it is California Historical Landmark #1042.

Inside, the museum presents a panoramic history of the U.S. Navy and the evolution of its ships, from the Revolutionary War and Civil War through the Spanish-American War, World War I and World War II, including the development of naval aviation. Ship models, artifacts, photographs, uniforms, toys and interactive elements tell the stories of the Navy, Marines and the sailors who served aboard these vessels.

At the center of the collection are detailed, scratch-built ship models created by museum curator and model ship builder Joe Frangiosa. Visitors may even find Frangiosa at work on his latest project and hear firsthand about the ships and history represented throughout the museum. A Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Roosevelt, Frangiosa later continued his military career with the U.S. Marine Corps.

With its new home aboard the USS Recruit, the museum offers families the chance to explore naval history inside a piece of San Diego naval history itself.
