From Surfboards to Stage Lights, Oceanside Offers a Cultural Experience Like No Other
Oceanside, California, is more than just sun, surf, and sand—it’s a vibrant hub of creativity, culture, and community. From historic missions to contemporary art galleries, outdoor markets to live theater, this North County coastal city offers a rich and diverse cultural experience for locals and visitors alike.

A Celebration of Surf and Art
This month, Oceanside is making cultural headlines with a unique collaboration between two of its leading institutions: the Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) and the California Surf Museum (CSM).
Featured in The San Diego Union-Tribune’s “In the Curator’s Words” by Michael Rocha, their new dual-venue exhibition, Surf Art: Exploring California’s Coastal Culture, brings together more than 30 regional artists in a show that captures the energy, rebellion, and rhythm of California’s surf scene. The exhibit features everything from paintings and textiles to murals, sculpture, and resin works—plus plenty of surfboards, of course.

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia: Oceanside’s Living Heritage Museum
Known as the “King of the Missions,” Mission San Luis Rey de Francia is both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural treasure in Oceanside. Founded in 1798 and built in its current cruciform structure by 1815, this Spanish Colonial masterpiece features architectural details like hand-carved wooden altars, a wooden cupola, and stunning murals and doors. It remains one of only two missions in California still cared for by Franciscan friars.
Families visiting Mission San Luis Rey will find a peaceful and enriching experience as they explore the museum and stroll the expansive, sun-dappled grounds. The self-guided museum tour offers an engaging look at California’s early history through artifacts, stories, and interactive displays that bring the mission era to life for visitors of all ages. Kids enjoy peeking into the old soldier’s barracks, tracing the outlines of historic adobe walls, and spotting centuries-old tools and textiles, while adults appreciate the beautifully preserved architecture and cultural significance of the site. Outside, families can wander through serene gardens, marvel at the oldest pepper tree in California, and visit the sunken lavanderia—a stone wash basin built by Native Luiseño labor. Whether you’re exploring the shaded arcades, visiting the peaceful cemetery, or enjoying a picnic on the mission’s green lawns, the Mission offers families a chance to step back in time, reflect, and connect in a uniquely meaningful setting.
The mission complex includes:
-
A fully preserved interpretive museum showcasing artifacts from early Native American life, Spanish colonial history, Mexico’s secular period, and American military influence. Beautiful gardens featuring a rare 1830 pepper tree—the oldest in California—alongside the “Sunken Gardens,” an archaeological lavanderia dating from the mission’s early years.
-
A serene Visitors’ Center, Gift Shop, Retreat Center, active parish church, and a reflective cemetery rich with historical symbolism—like the Franciscan skull & crossbones marking that Disney once featured in Zorro.
